THE BRIEF

Halden wanted people to hear their new speakers somewhere with nothing to look at.

WHAT WE BUILT

An open-air listening pavilion: one timber bench, twelve buried speakers, a frame on the horizon.

A listening pavilion with no walls. Twelve speakers buried under the salt, one bench, and a sky that did the rest.

THE STORY

The brief

Halden Audio had spent four years on a speaker that disappears into a room. They did not want a room at all. They wanted a place where the only thing competing with the sound was the weather.

What we built

We buried twelve speakers in a ring under a thin crust of salt and set one long bench in the middle. A single bronze frame stood two hundred metres away, so every guest had something to walk toward between tracks.

There were no screens and no signs. Guests arrived in groups of eight, sat for one side of a record, then walked out to the frame and back.

What happened

Two hundred and forty people came over two days. Most stayed for a second side. Halden now uses the recordings of that wind as the demo track in their stores.
